INTERMEDIATE COURSE
The intermediate corrosion course is designed for the those working
in the corrosion field and/or engineers with more than 2 years of experience.
DAY 1
1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
FORMS OF CORROSION
Corrosion is a rather complicated phenomenon involving both the material being corroded and the environment in which it is placed. Defending against corrosion becomes more feasible if one is able to classify corrosion phenomena based on the underlying mechanism of degradation. Fontana and Green pioneered this approach by advocating that corrosion be classified into eight forms, i.e., uniform corrosion, galvanic corrosion, crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, selective (leaching) corrosion, erosion corrosion, and stress corrosion. Each of these forms of corrosion will be discussed with relevant practical examples, and methods of prevention
2:30 pm - 3:00 pm
BREAK IN EXHIBIT HALL WITH REFRESHMENTS
3:00 pm - 4:30 am
INTRODUCTION TO CORROSION CONTROL DESIGN
The presentation will focus on how component and structure design can influence the effectiveness of corrosion control. Options in design can impact how well coatings, cathodic protection, chemical treatment, or corrosion resistant materials are able to mitigate corrosion. Furthermore, the presentation will illustrate how common errors in materials testing and selection processes translate to unexpectedly poor performance in real structures. Attendees will also learn how to select inspection methods and prioritize locations when resources are limited and potential degradation by corrosion is a concern.
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
SOCIAL HOUR WITH BAR AND APPETIZERS AT POOL
DAY 2
8:00 am - 9:30 am
DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF DEEP ANODE GROUNDBEDS
Methods, materials, and proper use of impressed deep anode groundbeds are discussed. How anode beds are designed and installed and various types of down-hole materials are presented.
9:30 am - 10:00 am
BREAK IN EXHIBIT HALL WITH REFRESHMENTS
10:00 am - 11:30 am
COATING INSPECTION
This presentation breaks the inspection process down into three main areas: surface preparation, coating application, and final inspection. A variety of coating inspection equipment will be on display and hands-on demonstrations will be conducted.
11:30 am - 1:00 pm
LUNCH FOR ALL
1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
CATHODIC PROTECTION RECTIFIER TROUBLESHOOTING
Troubleshooting CP rectifiers will be discussed.
2:30 pm - 3:00 pm
BREAK IN EXHIBIT HALL WITH REFRESHMENTS
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
DECOUPLING AND OVER-VOLTAGE PROTECTION ON CATHODICALLY PROTECTED STRUCTURES
Cathodic protection requires isolation of the structure from grounding systems, yet this results in safety concerns during abnormal electrical conditions. Decoupling using approved devices and methods can provide DC isolation coupled with safety grounding for AC and lightning conditions. Applications of this approach include over-voltage protection of insulated joints, mitigation of induced AC voltage, decoupling electrical equipment such as motor-operated valves, and decoupling a site grounding system from the power company grounds.
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
SOCIAL HOUR WITH BEER, WINE, AND APPETIZERS IN EXHIBIT HALL
DAY 3
8:00 am - 9:30 am
PIN BRAZING COURSE (Classroom)
Instructions in pin brazing will be given. To be given a certificate in pin brazing, both the classroom (at 8:00 am) and hands-on sessions (at 10:00 am) must be attended.
9:30 am - 10:00 am
BREAK WITH REFRESHMENTS
10:00 am - 11:30 am
PIN BRAZING COURSE (Hands-on)
Instructions in pin brazing will be given. To be given a certificate in pin brazing, both the classroom (at 8:00 am) and hands-on sessions (at 10:00 am) must be attended.
11:30 am - 1:00 pm
OPEN FORUM AND LUNCH
An informal open forum session will be held during lunch. Students are encouraged to participate. Comments are solicited regarding the material covered in the seminar and this is an excellent opportunity for students to ask additional questions about material covered in the seminar and provide input that will help to shape future seminars. There will also be a drawing for door prizes donated by the WSCS committee, exhibitors, and sponsors.
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
INTERMEDIATE COURSE EXAM
An Intermediate course examination will be given to those requesting it at the end of the seminar. Those students who pass the test will be awarded a certificate of successful completion of the intermediate course. The test is an open-book test. Test scores will be mailed to students and student's supervisor, if requested. The cost of this exam is $150 (exam and certificate) in addition to the normal registration fee.
